FAQ about Ramp Usage
1.) Can I use a ramp to load a person in a vehicle?
Yes, providing all of the following criteria are met: 1 - Since the wheelchair is occupied, you should never exceed a 2:12 slope ratio (for every 2 inches of rise a foot of ramp will be required). 2 - Always make sure a qualified assistant is present when using any portable ramp. 3 - Make certain there is adequate head clearance before entering the van. 4 - If using a side door entry, you need a minimum of 30" width to accommodate the portable ramp.
2.) What are the proper slope ratios for a ramp?
ADA guidelines are ALWAYS 1:12 ratio (for every inch of rise, one foot of ramp is required). This ratio is mandatory for all commercial locations, and is usually required for residential applications if being paid by a government agency. While we always recommend following ADA guidelines, private homes can have a maximum of a 2:12 ratio (one foot of ramp for every 2 inches of rise) for occupied wheelchairs & scooters. For un-occupied, stowage situations (where a device is being loaded into a vehicle or storage area with NO PASSENGER), a 3:12 ratio is acceptable as long as the user can safely maneuver the device up the incline.
